Clerk/Register of Deeds

The County Clerk is an officer of the County as prescribed by State law. Michigan Constitution provides that voters of each county shall elect a Clerk, on a partisan basis, every four years. Duties are prescribed by law and include Clerk to the St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners, Clerk of the Circuit Court, Clerk of the Family Court, Election Board of Canvassers, Clerk of the County Election Commission, County Plat Board, serves on the County Apportionment Board, and Clerk of the Concealed Weapons Licensing Board.

The County Clerk is the chief election official of the County, supervises all national, state, and local elections, and is responsible for the administration of the Michigan Campaign Finance Reporting Act and maintains the Qualified Voter File.

The General Division The General Division maintains official records for the County and Board of Commissioners. We issue vital records—including birth, death, and marriage certificates—along with business registrations, concealed pistol licenses, veteran discharges, notary commissions, and genealogy records. The 45th Circuit Court Clerk’s Division provides critical support to the operations of the Circuit Court, maintaining the official court record for all civil, criminal, and family cases. We manage court filings, maintain dockets, and ensure public access to case records as allowed by law.
